Welcome to the Netherlands. Here is what happens next.

The Career Spark follows the route from a job offer or a company plan abroad to a registered address, a BSN and a first Dutch payslip. Every guide opens with a scenario and then gets to the numbers, labelled with the year they apply to, and says plainly where the IND, a bank or a landlord has the final word.

Before you land

Picture a software engineer in Austin with a signed offer from a Rotterdam scale-up, a founder in Dubai who wants a Dutch BV and a residence permit to go with it, and an HR lead in Bengaluru moving six people at once. They are asking the same questions in a different order.

This magazine is written for all three. We explain how sponsorship, the 30% ruling and the self-employed routes actually work, what they cost in a given year, and which parts depend on a decision nobody outside the government can promise.

Best 30% Ruling Service 2026: ICS Payroll Leads for Expat Tax Planning

ICS Payroll leads for 30% ruling applications because it handles the full process: filing within four months of hire for backdating, testing the salary norm at €46,660 (or €35,468 for under-30s with a master's degree), and managing annual filings. The rate remains 30% through 2026, then steps to a planned flat 27% from 1 January…

Nobody can promise you an IND decision. What we can do is show you exactly what they look at.

The first 30 days

The order matters more than the speed. Most of what follows depends on one thing: a registered address.

  1. 01Day 1–5

    Register your address

Book the municipality appointment. Registration in the BRP gives you your BSN, the number every employer, bank and insurer will ask for.

  2. 02Day 5–10

    Activate DigiD

Request the government login once your BSN exists. The activation letter goes by post to your registered address.

  3. 03Day 5–20

    Open a bank account

Most banks want a BSN and an address. Acceptance is the bank's call, so start early and keep your documents ready.

  4. 04Within 4 months

    Basic health insurance

Dutch basic cover is mandatory for residents who live or work here. The deadline runs from registration, but cover is backdated.

  5. 05Within 4 months

    30% ruling application

Your employer applies with the tax office. Filed within four months of your start date, it can apply from day one.
